San Antonio built the case for medical cannabis in Texas. Here's how to use it.
When the legislature added PTSD to the Compassionate Use Program, it was veteran testimony,
much of it from this city, that carried the vote. With Joint Base San Antonio, the
military-medical complex, and one of the densest veteran populations in America, no Texas
city has more people who qualify and don't know it.
The VA gap, and how San Antonio patients route around it
Here's the frustrating loop a lot of local veterans hit: the physicians who know their
history best (at Audie Murphy VA or in the military health system) are federally barred
from touching cannabis. The way out is simpler than most expect. A civilian physician
registered with the state program evaluates you by video, documents PTSD or chronic pain or
any other qualifying condition, and enters a prescription into the CURT registry. Your VA
file, your benefits, and your VA care are untouched; VA policy says so explicitly.
The whole evaluation is a 15-minute call. There's no trip up 281, no base access question,
no records request from the VA, though if you have a VA diagnosis letter, it makes the
physician's documentation stronger.
Not just PTSD, and not just veterans
Since HB 46 took effect in September 2025, chronic pain lasting more than 90 days qualifies,
which in this city covers everyone from airmen with jump-rated knees to the civilian
workforce that builds and feeds the bases. Cancer, epilepsy, TBI (a signature injury of two
decades of deployments), Crohn's disease, and terminal illness are all on the list. Civilians
qualify on identical terms; the program has no military requirement anywhere in it.
Getting product in Bexar County
Licensed dispensaries deliver throughout the San Antonio metro and operate scheduled pickup
options in the city. Products are low-THC by law (gummies, tinctures, patches, and vape
products capped at 10 mg THC per dose), dispensed against the state registry, not a
card. Expect the pattern most local patients report: evaluation early in the week,
registered by midweek, first delivery before the weekend.
The services we compare run $45–$199 through the telehealth services we compare,
and veteran discounts are common enough that you should always ask.
Where you actually pick up in San Antonio
Two counters, one from each major operator, and they sit on opposite ends of the city.
Addresses verified 2026-10-12.
The Stone Oak location is a goodblend storefront, meaning you can walk in during business
hours and collect an order without an appointment negotiation, which in Texas is rarer than
it should be. The Austin Highway site is now the same kind of proposition from the other
direction: Texas Original converted it to an HB 46 satellite in March 2026, so it stores
medicine overnight and sells same-day instead of running on orders placed the day before. Between them, Bexar County is among the better-served metros in
the state, and Region 8's conditional licensee, Lone Star Bioscience, is meant to add a
third. Full statewide location table →
Conditions that bring San Antonio patients in
No metro in Texas has a patient mix this shaped by the military. Joint Base San Antonio and
Brooke Army Medical Center put an enormous population of active duty, retired, and
dependent patients in one place, and the conditions that follow them out of service are
the same four every time. Read the PTSD page first if you are separating or already out:
it covers the question veterans ask before any other, which is whether a Texas prescription
touches VA care or benefits.
I get my care at Audie Murphy VA. Can my VA doctor prescribe through TCUP?
No. Federal law bars VA physicians from prescribing or recommending cannabis. You’ll use a state-registered civilian physician instead, almost always by telehealth. VA policy is equally clear on the other side: participating in the Texas program does not affect your VA benefits or care.
Is there a veteran discount on the evaluation?
Frequently, yes. Several telehealth services and Texas dispensaries run standing veteran discounts on evaluations or products. It’s worth asking before you book. In a city where nearly one in ten adults is a veteran, most providers have an answer ready.
How does delivery work on the far side of Loop 1604?
The same as anywhere in Bexar County: order from a licensed dispensary online, and they deliver to your address: Stone Oak, Converse, or a ranch out past Helotes. Delivery windows in the San Antonio metro typically land within a few business days.
Does trauma from my service have to be combat-related to qualify as PTSD?
No. PTSD from any cause qualifies: training accidents, MST, first-responder trauma, or civilian events. The evaluating physician documents the condition; a prior formal diagnosis helps but isn’t required.
Does my VA disability rating help me qualify?
It is not a legal shortcut, but it is excellent documentation. A rating decision letter is a dated federal record describing your condition in clinical terms, which is exactly the sort of timeline a TCUP physician needs for chronic pain or PTSD. Bring the letter, or your VA problem list, to the video visit. The physician still makes an independent determination, but you have handed them most of the history rather than asking them to take your word for it.
I am active duty at JBSA. Can my spouse be a patient even if I cannot?
Yes. The UCMJ prohibition binds the service member, not the family. A spouse or adult dependent who is a Texas resident with a qualifying condition can be evaluated and prescribed like anyone else. Two cautions worth taking seriously: on-base housing is federal property where cannabis is prohibited regardless of any state prescription, and a service member sharing a household with legally possessed cannabis is in a position worth discussing with a JAG officer before, not after.
Is there anywhere in San Antonio to pick up, or is it delivery only?
Both now, which was not true a couple of years ago. Licensed dispensaries deliver across Bexar County, and San Antonio was one of the first cities to get a satellite dispensing location after HB 46 loosened the rules that had forced licensees to spread thin across public health regions before adding a second point in any one of them. Pickup coverage here is still expanding through the license rollout, so confirm current locations on the dispensary’s own site before you drive.
How does the cost compare to what I already pay at the VA pharmacy?
Unfavorably on paper, and that is worth stating plainly. VA-dispensed medication is free or nearly free for most rated veterans, while TCUP is entirely cash: $45 to $199 for the evaluation and $75 to $150 a month in product for a typical dose. No insurance covers any of it, and it never will while cannabis stays federally scheduled. The comparison veterans actually make is not against the copay, it is against what the copay medication does to them.
Will using the program affect my VA benefits or my care at Audie Murphy?
No. VA policy is explicit that veterans participating in state medical cannabis programs do not lose benefits or eligibility for care, and your VA providers can document your use in your record without triggering anything. What they cannot do is prescribe it, complete a state form, or pay for it. Tell your VA team anyway, particularly if you are on opioids, benzodiazepines, or sleep medication, because the interaction conversation is the one that actually protects you.

Don't let your prescription lapse
Texas issues no card, so nothing expires in your wallet and no notice arrives in the mail.
Access ends when your refills run out or your physician's follow-up date arrives, and most
patients find out from a dispensary order that won't go through. Leave your email and we'll
remind you before that happens, plus send the current renewal prices.
